Welcome to 5th Grade! Mrs. Henson, Room 136
WELCOME!!
Welcome to 5th Grade. My name is Corinne Henson, and I live here in Oak Forest with my husband, Gil, and our two sons, Dylan and Tyler. Dylan is a freshman at Purdue NW studying mechanical engineering and playing baseball. Tyler is a junior at OFHS and plays full-time travel baseball. My husband’s two older sons, Chad and Nick, also grew up in D142 and graduated from OFHS. We’re originally NW siders (Go Cubs!), but have lived here 15 years. I love being a part of the community I teach in. I have my BA in Elementary Education from UIC-Chicago along with 3 endorsements in general, physical, and biological science. I previously taught third grade for 14 years in Chicago. This is my 12th year at Foster, AND my 26th year teaching!! I hope you’re all ready to start an exciting and challenging year. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm and experience with your children.
CONTACT INFORMATION
I believe parents, children, and teachers are a team when it comes to a child’s education. Communication is an important factor in every child’s academic and social success. Therefore, I feel it is important to have constant communication with families through out the school year. Please feel free to contact me regarding academics, behavior, health, and/or social/emotional issues your child may be dealing with both in school and at home.

Breakfast/Lunch/Water Bottles
Students are reminded to take advantage of the FREE breakfast and lunch that is available daily. Please note that the menu can change due to supply shortages. Don't forget to bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Just a Reminder: According to the District’s Wellness Policy, other than lunches and a personal snack kids bring from home, NO outside food is allowed. (This includes NO candy, cupcakes, or treats for a child's birthday or classroom parties)
Bathroom
We have a bathroom in our classroom that may be used anytime during the day. Students don’t have to raise their hand, but I do ask that they try not to go while I am teaching. Please wait until I’m done, so you don’t miss anything important. Also, if the bathroom is occupied, please wait at your desk. Do not form a line. If it’s an emergency, students may ask to use the bathroom down the hall. Girls may keep “additional” items in their backpack or my desk (I have a safe place for that) Please remind your child to help keep the bathroom clean.
Cell Phones
I recognize that a cell phone is often a necessary means of communication before and after school between a parent and a child. If a cell phone is brought to school, it must be turned off before entering the building and kept inside the student’s backpack until the end of the day. Students may turn the phone on once they have left the building. All phone correspondence between students and parents during the school day must be made via the office or classroom phone.
Homework Success Folder
Students can expect a small homework assignment possibly each night, Monday - Thursday. It will be an extension of the curriculum that is taught in class. If there is homework, it may be sent home that night in their HOMEWORK SUCCESS FOLDER, as part of classwork, or as an IPAD assignment. This folder may also contain any incomplete classroom assignments from that day AND any notes/handouts from the office. Please check your child’s folder each night. If your child is bringing home too many unfinished classroom assignments, then perhaps they are not using their time wisely in school. If this does occur, please contact me immediately and we will work together to make sure your child is successfully completing their work in school. Any homework and unfinished classroom work that goes home should be RETURNED the next day in this folder. Please check your child’s work each night to ensure that they understand the assignment and are turning in their best effort. Late Work: Any assignment that is late will receive 10 points off for each day it is late. After 2 days, your child will receive a zero if it is not turned in.
Behavior
Forest Ridge District 142 participates in PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support). Please carefully read, sign, and return the “5th Grade Discipline Plan” that is coming home. Each day your child manages to be respectful, responsible, and safe, they will earn points & paws. If your child is caught simply doing what they are supposed to do, he or she can earn more points/paws. Paws = Prizes. At the end of each week, 2 children’s names will be drawn from the bucket for prizes from the office. The 2 students that have the most paws at the end of the month will also be awarded prizes. In addition to earning points, your child can loose points. If your child fails to do a classroom or homework assignment, or forgets their supplies, they can loose points for not being responsible. If your child’s behavior or attitude isn’t safe or respectful, they can also loose points. Parents will be notified if their child has not been respectful, responsible, or safe more than twice in one day and an Office Discipline Referral (ODR) will be sent home. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe
